Jun 8, 2026 | 2:08 PM

According to the latest Alberta Crop Report by AFSC, seeding progress across the province advanced significantly thanks to dry conditions, before widespread rain brought surface and sub-surface soil moisture ratings back up.

As of June 2, seeding progress for the Peace Region sat at 78 per cent, with 84.7 per cent spring wheat, 69.2 per cent barley, 65.5 per cent of oats, 74.7 per cent canola, and 91.4 per cent of dry peas.

This is the furthest behind region in the entire province, as well as for the five-year (93.4%) and ten-year (88.9%) averages for the area.

Provincially, all major crops in Alberta are 92.4 per cent are seeded as of the date of the report.

Crop development progress remained limited last week due to persistent dry conditions followed by cooler temperatures accompanied by rain at the end of the week. Significant growth is expected once temperatures increase again.

For surface and sub-surface soil moisture ratings in the Peace, recent rainfall has notably improved conditions. Surface soil moisture is at 90 per cent good-to-excellent and 99.3 per cent good-to-excellent for sub-surface moisture.

Tame hay conditions are reported as 30 per cent poor, 35 per cent fair, 30 per cent good, and 6 per cent excellent in the Peace.

The next Alberta Crop Report is set to be released on Friday, June 12.
