Canada’s Sudarshan Yellamaraju set to make U.S. Open debut in rookie PGA Tour season

Sudarshan Yellamaraju is peaking at just the right time heading into his first-ever U.S. Open.

Yellamaraju, from Mississauga, Ont., moved up to 44th on the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup standings after tying for eighth at the RBC Canadian Open on Sunday, the third top-10 finish of his rookie season on the top-flight circuit. Just in time for him to join three other Canadians in the field of the third major of the season.

“I know that no matter how I played that I still have to go adjust to completely different conditions (at the U.S. Open),” said Yellamaraju after completing his final round at TPC Toronto on Sunday. “But it feels good to have a good result, it does help with the confidence and momentum.

“(The U.S. Open’s) a completely different beast, for sure.”

The 24-year-old Yellamaraju will be joined at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y., by veterans Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., Corey Conners of Listowel, Ont., and Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ont.

Conners and Taylor qualified because they were eligible for the 2025 Tour Championship. Silverman got in by grabbing one of four spots at BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., on June 8 before flying up to Caledon, Ont., for the Canadian Open.

“That was a great experience,” said Silverman of coming out on top in what’s often called the longest day in sports. “Got to play my home golf course in Florida, one of my home courses, and had some members out there watching, the GM, the director of golf, some employees that I see all the time.

“Getting to do that in front of the home crowd, it was awesome.”

Taylor is 55th on the FedEx Cup rankings, Conners is 84th, and Silverman is 145th.

LPGA TOUR — Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., leads the Canadian contingent into this week’s Meijer LPGA Classic. She’s 42nd on the LPGA Tour’s Race to CME Globe points list before play begins at Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Mich. Maude-Aimee Leblanc (112th) of Sherbrooke, Que., Savannah Grewal (148th) of Mississauga, Ont., and Vancouver’s Leah John (185th) are also in the field. Amateur Taylor Kehoe of Strathroy, Ont., a senior at Michigan State, was a sponsor’s exemption.

EPSON TOUR — Maddie Szeryk-DiBello of London, Ont., is the top-ranked Canadian playing in this week’s Great Lakes Championship at the Highlands. She’s 18th on the second-tier Epson Tour’s Race for the Card points list. She’ll be joined by Megan Osland (47th) of Kelowna, B.C., Monet Chun (75th) of Richmond Hill, Ont., Mary Parsons (131st) of Delta, B.C., Yeji Kwon (138th) of Port Coquitlam, B.C., Brooke Rivers of Brampton, Ont., and Brigitte Thibault of Rosemere, Que. Amateur Addison Kartusch, a sophomore at Bowling Green University from Winnipeg, was a sponsor’s exemption.
