159th Birthday

City of Grande Prairie ready for a “celebration of community” this Canada Day

Jun 30, 2026 | 12:15 PM

Celebrations will get underway tomorrow (Wednesday, July 1) for the 159th birthday of the Great White North.

Mayor Clayton says the City is proud to plan and continue to grow the celebration in ways that allow “more people to enjoy the experience together.”

“Seeing residents gather in Muskoseepi Park year after year speaks to the importance of creating spaces where people feel welcome, connected and encouraged to take part.”

The annual City of Grande Prairie parade will get going at 2 p.m. and travel along 96 Street and 100 Ave, ending in the NWP parking lot, with road closures going into effect as of 6 a.m.:

Beginning at approximately 6 a.m.:

  • Westbound 100 Avenue between 98 Street and 102 Street will be closed for event setup.

Beginning at approximately 1:50 p.m.:

  • Rolling road closures will be in effect along the parade route from 108 Avenue to Northwestern Polytechnic.
  • Roads will reopen in sections as the parade passes to help reduce traffic delays while maintaining a safe distance between vehicles and parade participants.

The City does note that eastbound traffic on 99 Avenue and 100 Avenue will remain open during the parade.

Activities will also start at noon in Muskoseepi Park, including free swimming at the Aquatera Outdoor pool from noon to 5 p.m., carnival rides and games, beer gardens, food trucks, and live music at the Amphitheatre.

However, with all the celebrations taking place, all other City facilities, excluding the Ernie Radbourne Pavilion and Outdoor Pool, will be closed for the day.

Finally, the evening will wrap up with a firework display starting at 11:30 p.m., with a slight change this year, having it take place at Legion Field.

To help residents enjoy Canada’s birthday, the City is also making transit services free, with Late-Night On Demand Service running until 1 a.m.
