EC forecasting severe thunderstorms in parts of the Peace

UPDATE: The orange watches for tornadoes issued earlier by Environment Canada have shifted a bit to the east.  

The watches cover the area from Sunset House up to High Prairie, then east past Calling Lake. 

The Fox Creek and Whitecourt areas, down to Rocky Mountain House, are also included.

 The yellow watches for thunderstorms go from Eaglesham to High Prairie, over to Peerless Lake and north past Manning and Hotchkiss.

Environment Canada has issued weather alerts across Alberta today (Wednesday, July 15).

Locally, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the eastern half of the Peace Region, starting in the Fairview area, stretching all the way to the Alberta-Saskatchewan border.

Heavy rain, strong winds and potentially hail are expected to start this evening and last overnight, and EC does note that utility outages are possible.

An orange tornado watch is also in effect for Central Alberta, spanning from Valleyview to Edmonton; residents travelling south today along Highway 43 should use caution and stay up to date on weather conditions using Environment Canada’s website.

Environment Canada suggests those who live in these areas use caution this evening and stay indoors.
