Silver medal for Grande Prairie swimmer at the Commonwealth Games

Grande Prairie swimmer Oliver Dawson has won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Dawson took second in the 200 metre breaststroke Tuesday afternoon in Glasgow, Scotland, in a time of 2:08.39.

Filip Nowacki of Jersey won gold, finishing 0.52 seconds ahead of Dawson. Australia’s Zac Stubblety-Cook won the bronze, finishing 0.52 seconds behind Dawson.

Dawson’s time was good enough to break an 18-year-old Canadian record in the 200 breast.

Dawson finished fourth in the 100 metre breaststroke final on Saturday. His time left him off the podium by 0.05 seconds.

Sam Williamson of Australia won the gold, followed by Nowacki and England’s Adam Ramsay-Peaty.

Dawson finished eighth in the final of the 50 metre breaststroke on Monday. Williamson, South Africa’s Michael Houlie, and Ramsay-Peaty won gold, silver and bronze.

Dawson was also part of Canada’s mixed relay team that finished fourth in its race on Tuesday afternoon. Australia, South Africa, and Scotland won gold, silver and bronze.

Dawson’s silver medal comes 44 years after Grande Prairie’s Willie de Wit won a gold medal in boxing at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia.
