Forestry companies report second quarter results

Jul 30, 2026 | 6:01 AM

Canfor

Canfor is reporting operating income of $5 million, with adjusted operating income of $24 million, for the second quarter.

The company that owns a sawmill in Grande Prairie says in a news release that its lumber segment recorded a profit of $41.2 million in the second quarter, after a loss of $43.7 million in the first three months of this year.

The company says lumber markets will still be good early in quarter three but will moderate later because of uncertainty and “persistent affordability challenges.”

Weaker demand in China and Japan producing more of its own lumber are expected to push down demand and prices.

West Fraser

West Fraser Timber is reporting a second-quarter loss of $61 million on sales of $1.434 billion.

The company that owns the OSB mill located along Highway 40 south of Grande Prairie had a $188 million loss in the first quarter.

In a news release announcing the results, West Fraser says it expects what it calls “softer demand” for OSB in 2026.

The company says American tariffs and people still having trouble affording a house are creating uncertainty.

West Fraser says OSB is not subject to the American tariffs announced on July 20.
