Alberta government invests in Alberta Newsprint Company’s Whitecourt expansion

Aug 13, 2026 | 1:10 PM

The Government of Alberta is contributing $1.5 million to the $50 million expansion of Whitecourt Newsprint Company Ltd., which operates as Alberta Newsprint Company.

The funding will come from the Investment and Growth Fund, which aims to attract private investments to create jobs, strengthen rural communities and grow Alberta’s economy.

Provincial officials say the expansion will modernize the Whitecourt facility by enabling it to produce multiple grades of paper. Reportedly, it will also create 13 permanent full-time jobs and 25 temporary construction jobs while retaining more than 220 existing positions.

“I know firsthand the important role this paper mill plays in Whitecourt and Alberta’s forestry sector,” commented West Yellowhead MLA Martin Long. “This expansion helps secure good local jobs, supports long-term growth and ensures the company remains competitive for years to come.”

Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry and Parks, also said the investment will strengthen the forestry industry.

The government says Alberta Newsprint Company is the only newsprint mill in the province, playing a critical role in its forestry supply chain by turning wood fibres into paper products.
