Concerns raised about future of licensed pre-school programs in Alberta
The Association of Canadian Early Learning Programs says it is worried about the future of licensed pre-school programs.
The organization, also know as ACE, says in a news release that half of Alberta’s licensed pre-schools could close if the “Child Care Affordability Grant continues to favour one licensed model over another.”
ACE says a survey of pre-school operators found that 74 per cent have seen enrollments drop, 81 per cent are opting to put their kids in daycare because the fees are low, and half could close before or during the 2026-27 school year.
The organization says both preschools and daycares are licensed under the same provincial legislation, and both are counted under the $10/day federal program, but only daycares can access funding under that program.
