GPPS & Highway Patrol remove 18 commercial trucks from GP roads

The Grande Prairie Police Service and Alberta Sheriff Highway Patrol joined forces last month to conduct the first-ever commercial vehicle enforcement operation.

On Aug. 21, GPPS and Highway Patrol spent six hours inspecting 23 commercial vehicles passing through the City at a designated inspection site south of the airport.

During their operation, 45 violations for safety and compliance issues were found, resulting in 18 commercial trucks placed out of service and 12 tickets issued.

One driver also received an Immediate Roadside Sanction for violating Alberta’s zero-alcohol tolerance policy for commercial drivers and was removed from the road.

GPPS noted that the driver was hauling “fuel products with a gross vehicle weight of approximately 63,500 kilograms.”

Superintendent for GPPS, John Respet credited Highway Patrol for their shared commitment to keeping roadways safe; “By working together, we can effectively identify unsafe vehicles and drivers, improve compliance within the commercial transportation industry, and help protect everyone travelling on our highways.”

The Police Service notes that this successful joint operation “could lead to future collaborative projects focused on traffic safety throughout the region.”
