MP Warkentin outlines Conservative priorities for Parliament

Peace Country MP Chris Warkentin has released a statement outlining Conservative priorities as the current session resumes.

Warkentin says Conservatives will focus on lowering costs, protecting Canadian jobs, keeping communities safe, and restoring confidence in the immigration system.

He’s calling Prime Minister Mark Carney’s claim that affordability is the best it’s been in a decade ‘ridiculous’ and that a spring poll found nearly six in 10 Albertans said it was difficult to meet monthly expenses.

The first session of the 45th Canadian Parliament resumed Monday.

As Parliament begins a new session, Peace Country MP Chris Warkentin says Conservatives will focus on lowering costs, protecting Canadian jobs, keeping communities safe and restoring confidence in the immigration system.

“Families across the Peace Country have told me this summer about how hard it has become to keep up with groceries, mortgages and other monthly bills,” said Warkentin. “They need a government that takes these concerns seriously and delivers results.”

Prime Minister Mark Carney has said that “affordability is the best it’s been in over a decade.” Warkentin said that “this claim is ridiculous, as most Peace Country families are paying more for everything.” A spring poll found that nearly six in 10 Albertans said it was difficult to meet their monthly expenses.

“Canadians hear a lot about Mark Carney’s speeches, summits and signing ceremonies, but they want to know when life will become more affordable for them,” Warkentin said. “Conservatives will press for practical measures that let people keep more of what they earn and help Canadian businesses create jobs.”

Warkentin said Conservatives have identified more than $150 billion in proposed government spending reductions, including cuts to bureaucracy, consultants and corporate subsidies. Conservatives will bring those proposals forward as part of their efforts to reduce deficits and the pressure on taxpayers.

“Our country is worth fighting for,” said Warkentin. “Conservatives will work for a Canada where families can afford to build a future, communities are safe, and the next generation has more opportunity than the last.”
