Twelve Albertans competing in 28th WorldSkills Competition

A total of 12 Albertans are set to represent the country at the 28th WorldSkills Competition.

From Sept. 22-27 in Shanghai, China, approximately 1,500 competitors from over 70 countries will compete in skilled trade and technology disciplines.

“Alberta’s competitors have earned their place on the world stage through hard work, dedication and excellence,” said Myles McDougall, Minister of Advanced Education. “Their participation reflects the talent, determination and skills being developed across our province. I wish them every success as they represent Canada in Shanghai and know they will make Alberta proud.”

Among the Alberta competitors are Benjamin Jamison (Aerospace Technology), Carter Kokot (Automobile Technology), Tate McGarry (Cabinet Making), Anika Jones (Car Painting), Logan Peters (Carpentry), Jacob McClelland (CNC Machining), Keegan Sturge (Electrical Installations), Luke Emeny (Heavy Vehicle Technology), Tyler Gunther (Millwright), Kylar Bloomberg (Plumbing), Cooper Ross (Web Technologies), and Lucas Stang (Welding).

According to the province, Alberta will have the largest contingent from any other province on the national team.

“Having 12 Albertans on Team Canada speaks to the depth of skilled trades and technology talent across our province,” Raymond Massey, president of Skills Canada Alberta. “These competitors have invested countless hours mastering their craft, and WorldSkills offers a unique opportunity to measure their skills against the very best in the world.”

Currently, there are over 81,000 registered apprentices in Alberta, and the province says they continue to prepare the next generation of skilled professionals for rewarding careers in high-demand sectors while helping meet the province’s growing workforce needs.
