PCA Celebrating 35th anniversary of mobile mammography service

Primary Care Alberta is recognizing the 35th anniversary of Screen Test’s mobile mammography service.

The program’s first visit was to Hinton on Sept. 19, 1991, before visiting an additional 25 communities that year.

Since then, Screen Test has had two mobile trailers visiting 120 communities and seeing up to 15,000 clients each year.

Minister of Primary and Preventive Health Services Justin Wright says mobile mammography means less time travelling, fewer added costs, and better access to important screening closer to home.

“Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in Alberta, which is why making screening easier to access matters,” Wright says. “I want to thank the dedicated staff who keep this program running and help Albertans get the care they need.”

Three-time beast cancer survivor and retired screen test staff member Colleen Waters says she knows firsthand the impact the program has had over the years.

“I am so grateful,” says Waters. “For myself, my family, my community, and many other women just like me who have had their lives touched by the mobile mammography program.”

Through their permanent offices and mobile program, Screen Test identified more than 3,100 cases of breast cancer between October 1990 and January 2025.
