Local artist recognized at Artists for Conservation Festival

A local artist has been recognized at an international event.

Emily Lozeron was attending the Artists for Conservation Festival in Vancouver last week when she was named a recipient of the Western Art Collector Magazine Award of Excellence, alongside works from the United States, the UK, Japan, and more.

Lozeron won the award for her painting Here Comes the Sun, part of a series of pieces that depict music notes using natural scenery and wildlife.

“I was actually sitting, taking pictures of birds,” Lozeron says. “One had a little Savannah Sparrow sat on a wire on a fence post. It was singing away and had the most beautiful sound. And I was thinking it would be amazing if I could incorporate music and nature into a painting.”

Lozeron says she was very excited to see her work be celebrated alongside the work of artists from other countries like Japan and Mexico.

“People from Japan had come over that had their work in, and Australia, New Zealand, United States, and Europe, and they were all in this exhibit, and they were the best of the best,” she says. “All of the proceeds from anything that is sold in the exhibit also goes towards conservation. Everything is more than just the artwork.”

She says it is a surreal feeling to win the award.

“We’re always our worst critic,” she says. “You wonder if the impact that you are trying to put out there is actually portrayed to other people and if people see what I see or can feel that impact. And then to get an award and realize that people do? It’s very rewarding.”

Artists for Conservation is a Canadian-based non-profit that seeks to support conservation and environmental education through art that celebrates nature.

Lozeron’s artwork can be seen in person at the Grant Berg Gallery.
