First snowfall of the season expected this weekend

Oct 8, 2026 | 7:37 AM

A special weather statement has been issued by Environment Canada for the majority of Alberta; spanning from the Grande Prairie area and tracking south.

The national weather office says the first accumulating snow of the year is expected over the Thanksgiving weekend, which may affect holiday travel plans.

Widespread rain is expected across the province today (Thursday, Oct. 8), turning into snowfall by Friday in the west-central regions, and the rest of Alberta by Saturday.

Snow is to taper off from north to south by Sunday.

The amount of snow to fall in the Peace Region is uncertain, according to Environment Canada.

Please adjust your travel plans as necessary and prepare for quickly deteriorating conditions on roadways.
