The graduates will be the last class before GPPS’ official switchover in less than two weeks.

Chief Dwayne Lakusta says between the 10 graduating recruits and the latest graduating class of four experienced officers, GPPS now consists of over 80 officers.

“This allows us to staff up the complete frontline, criminal investigations,” Lakusta says. “As we start to hire more officers, that’s where we start to fill in some of the specialized units. You know our B-team, school resource officers, and more community engagement officers. Different areas that aren’t part of frontline policing, but they’re just going to provide that enhanced level of policing for Grande Prairie.”

Among the graduates were Constables Triston Jacklin and Travis Reimer, who both not only received the Top Physical Training Award for their class but were among the highest scorers for fitness in Lethbridge Polytechnic’s history of training police recruits.

Chief Lakusta is praising Jacklin, Reimer, and all GPPS’s officers for their efforts and dedication.

“To have four out of 14 of the fitness awards that stretch right across the province for all the agencies that Lethbridge Polytech provides too, that’s incredible,” he says. “It just shows you the depth, the experience, the diversity of lived experience that we have here in Grande Prairie. So, it’s just a great moment. We are really setting ourselves up here for success.”

He says recruitment is already underway for a fifth class.

“We are identifying the next class that we hope to have through sometime in the early new year,” he says. “And of course we’re continuing to hire experienced officers to help fill the rank and file here. We’re in a good position coming into October 21 as far as the staffing complement, frontline operations, and criminal investigations.”

GPPS will assume its role as the police of jurisdiction for Grande Prairie on Oct. 21.
