Storm host weekend doubleheader

Oct 9, 2026 | 1:02 PM

With four wins and two losses on the young AJHL season, the Grande Prairie Storm hit the ice this weekend at Bonnetts Energy Centre to host a weekend doubleheader with two other teams.

The first tilt is Friday night against the Devon Xtreme. Puck drop is 7:00 p.m. This will be the first time this season the two teams meet.

The second game will go ahead Saturday night against the Bonnyville Pontiacs. Puck drop is 6:00 p.m.

Storm Captain Braeden Veldhuizen says the team is excited for the home showcase this weekend.

“We are starting to play more games and getting more confident.”

The 20-year-old Veldhuizen says being picked as the captain feels good as it is his last year in the league.

“We got a really good culture and returning players, a lot of guys that have played junior (hockey) before, and they’ve helped bring the leadership aspect to the team so it’s not all on me and makes my job easier.”

Assistant Captain, Grande Prairie born and raised Bowen Grycan, says he’s excited to play for the Storm in his last AJHL season.

“I think there’s a buzz about being the hometown kid and playing in front of all the fans at home is super exciting and I’m pumped to get going!”

Grycan says getting the opportunity to be a leader anywhere is a “great honour” and especially for the Storm.

Assistant Captain Treysen Miller has been with Grande Prairie for two seasons. He says he wants to build off the hard work the team did last year.

“It’s a big step. We have to look after guys that are coming in (joining the team), but we had a great leadership group last year and we are gonna try to replicate some of the things they did.”

Miller hopes the Storm can pull off two home wins before a four game road trip after Thanksgiving.
