Vancouver officer tells Myles Gray hearing of uncertainty before deadly confrontation
VANCOUVER — A Vancouver police officer involved in the deadly confrontation with Myles Gray in 2015 says there was considerable uncertainty about the situation before he and other officers encountered him in response to an urgent call for back-up.
Const. Eric Birzneck says at the ongoing public hearing into Gray’s death that he and other responding officers were “going into the unknown” before ascending a staircase on a street near the boundary between Burnaby and Vancouver to find him.
Birzneck is testifying at the hearing called by the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner hearing in Vancouver to determine if he or six other officers intentionally or recklessly used unnecessary force in the violent altercation with Gray.
He is the first to testify among the officers, all of whom deny wrongdoing in the incident.
