City flags at half mast following CFB Wainright tragedy

Oct 19, 2026 | 12:45 PM

Flags at Grande Prairie City Hall are being flown at half-mast to recognize those affected by the tragic incident at CFB Wainwright over the weekend.

Mayor Clayton expressed her deepest sympathies on behalf of the City in a statement released earlier today (Monday, Oct. 19):

“Today, the City of Grande Prairie joins communities across Alberta in expressing our deepest sympathies following the tragic incident at CFB Wainwright.”

“On behalf of the City of Grande Prairie, our thoughts are with the Wainwright community, the military personnel and emergency responders involved, and the families and loved ones of everyone affected.”

“During this incredibly difficult time, Grande Prairie stands alongside Wainwright, offering our support, compassion and solidarity.”

Reports say four soldiers were killed and 39 injured after a quickly moving grass fire breached the fireguard and surrounded units during a training exercise.

Emergency crews, including those from the Canadian Armed Forces and the town of Wainwright, were called and brought the fire under control.
