City marks Grande Prairie policing transition with GPPS and GP RCMP

Oct 22, 2026 | 1:40 PM

The Grande Prairie RCMP detachment has taken its final bow.

At an event at Bonnetts Energy Centre Wednesday, Oct. 21, the City of Grande Prairie wished a fond farewell to the detachment as the Grande Prairie Police Service assumes all city jurisdiction policing duties.

Alberta RCMP Deputy Commissioner Trevor Daroux attended the event to thank every RCMP member and municipal employee who has served Grande Prairie over the years.

In a statement issued by the Alberta RCMP, Daroux expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped make the transition possible.

“While this change brings mixed emotions for many who have served in Grande Prairie and called the city home,” Daroux says. “It also reflects years of commitment, planning, and collaboration.”

Daroux says the RCMP’s connection to Grande Prairie reaches back more than 120 years, beginning with regional patrols by the North-West Mounted Police.

“As policing responsibilities evolved over the decades, the RCMP became the police of jurisdiction in 1943,” he says. “Since then, the detachment has grown alongside the community, with generations of RCMP employees contributing to public safety and community well-being.”

The former RCMP detachment building will now serve as the GPPS headquarters, while the remaining RCMP officers will now operate out of the newly opened Clairmont Detachment.

During the ceremony, Daroux signed a commemorative plaque along with Grande prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton, GPPS Chief Dwayne Lakusta and Chair of the Grande Prairie Police Commission Dan Wong.
