The Grande Prairie Police Service has announced its new police canine, Dante, and his handler, Constable Shane Weinmeyer, is now in service.

Dante is a one-and-a-half-year-old Belgian Malinois and German shepherd mix from the Czech Republic and has completed extensive training with Weinmeyer in Calgary to build the skills and partnership required to serve as a team.

“The addition of a police canine team significantly strengthens our ability to locate suspects, finding missing or vulnerable persons, and supporting critical incident response,” says GPPS Chief Dwayne Lakusta. “Dante and Constable Weinmeyer have put in countless hours of training to reach this point, and we are proud to see them begin serving our community.”

Police dogs assist officers in a variety of duties, including criminal apprehension, suspect tracking, evidence searches, and more.

Now that they are in service, residents may see Dante and Weinmeyer at police incidents or as they train in a variety of locations like parking lots, industrial areas, and residential neighbourhoods.

GPPS says local businesses can support Dante’s training by contacting the police and allowing access to their properties.
