Crime Prevention lunch and learn on sexting cancelled

Oct 1, 2018 | 11:09 AM

UPDATE: The Lunch and Learn set for lunch today has been cancelled. George says it is due to “unforeseen circumstances”.

Crime Prevention is hoping to give parents and grandparents the tools they need when it comes to knowing about their kids’ cell phones, apps, and sexting.

They’re hosting a lunch and learn about sexting Tuesday, October 2 from12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at City on 99th.

Cheryl George with the City’s Crime Prevention department says it’s something that is out there but is not talked about a lot. She says it was the community who suggested the topic for their lunch and learn.

“Every Lunch and Learn we have everybody do a survey where we ask what they would like to see a lunch and learn on and we’ve had a lot of responses of sexting and luring.  They want to know what they can do to protect their kids,” she says.

George says the 45 to 50-minute presentation will teach participants what to look for in terms of behaviour, chat rooms and apps.

“We talk with the RCMP quite a bit and the number of reports that they get of either sexting or what comes after, they get reports of that quite a bit, so it is definitely something that is prevalent.”

To register visit Crime Prevention’s Facebook page or Eventbrite.  They have room for about 35 participants and are asking that if you do register, please make sure you attend, or cancel your registration so other people can fill those empty seats.
