Sexsmith mayor Claude Lagace passes away

The town of Sexsmith is mourning the passing of their mayor.

Claude Lagace passed away Saturday at Points West Hospice at the age of 66.

County of Grande Prairie Reeve Leanne Beaupre has many fond memories of her dealings with Lagace.

“The partnerships that we had created with the Town of Sexsmith, and then the other towns and villages, Claude was always a leader in the discussions that we had. He worked tirelessly for his community and he was not a man of many words, but when he did speak everyone listened.”

Beaupre adds Lagace leaves a lasting legacy, not just in Sexsmith but throughout the entire County.

“Over the last few years he has been chair of the Grande Spirit Foundation, and he has worked very hard for the Lake View home in Clairmont. It has been very successful and I know that the residents of the County of Grande Prairie are very appreciative of the work that he had done to make that a reality.”

According to The Town of Sexsmith Mayor Lagace had one term on Council, from 1995 to 1997, before being elected continuously for the past 17 years. He served from 2001 to 2006 as a Councillor and 2007 to 2018 as Mayor.
