Wildfire hazard reduction work starting today (Monday)
The County of Grande Prairie will start some work to reduce the forest fire risk Monday.
The County’s Dan Lemieux says deadfall and what he calls “over-mature” spruce trees will be removed from two areas south of the city.
“South of Pine Brook Estates and Pine Valley Estates, so it’s south and a little bit east of the City of Grande Prairie, just north of Evergreen Park, is one area. Another area is just south of Bear Ridge Estates.”
He adds work will go ahead, even if conditions are wet.
“It’s a good time of the year for people to do logging. The weather should not impact our project. (We expect) to have all the work completed by early December.”
Lemieux says the forested areas where this is being done will be off-limits to the public until crews are finished.
“There’ll be some noise because of logging and chainsaw work. Also, there will be some log trucks hauling logs to the Canfor mill because the logs were sold to the Canfor mill.”
Whatever debris is left will be burned once the fire season ends.
