RCMP warning of email scams

Nov 21, 2017 | 12:38 PM

Grande Prairie RCMP is warning residents to watch out for email scams.

Police say that the computer scam consists of a message from someone claiming to be an online Crown Prosecutor Service from the Department of Justice. The email then says you have been summoned to court as a witness and will invite you to click on a link.

Once the link is clicked, a virus is installed on the computer. Officers warn that this type of email is not from the actual prosecutor’s office.

RCMP remind the public that anyone summoned to court will be served in person.

You can contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre online or call 1-888-495-8501 to learn about scams. If you think you may be the victim of a scam, contact RCMP at 780-830-5700.
