County’s regional fire services open houses hailed a success

Jun 7, 2018 | 7:20 AM

The County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Services has gained some recruits following a number of open houses last month.

Deputy Fire Chief Dan Verdun says the regional approach was better received.

“Our Bezanson station, to my understanding, we received up to an additional 14 applicants so I would deem that as extremely successful.”

He says it can be hard to find recruits.

“People don’t have the time that they once had to be able to dedicate to different volunteer organizations. Fire is unique and unlike certain volunteer organizations, we have a very high expectation and very high need of time spent from those volunteers. We have to have them adequately trained in order to ensure they are safe and are able to do the job.”

The Beaverlodge Fire Department reports a number of recruits as well.
