Chuckwagon champions crowned at Stompede

Jun 3, 2018 | 11:27 PM

The aggregate winners also won the Dash for Cash in all three circuits in chuckwagon racing at Stompede.

Evan Salmond from Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan took the $50,000 WPCA final. His outriders were Dayton Sutherland and Ethan Motowylo.

We asked him how the rain Sunday evening at Evergreen Park may have influenced the race.

“It didn’t hurt the track none. It’s a good track, it’s just nobody likes driving with wet lines. I actually used a little pair of gloves to keep a better grip.”

This is the first time Salmond has won at Stompede.

Eric Rever of Manning took the Western Chucks final, his second Stompede title in a row.

“It’s always an honour to be able to able to win the Stompede. It’s a top-notch, high-class show here and it’s always something you look forward to. With us up north, we usually have a little trouble training, but it was drier than heck this spring, so I found it really helped out and got the horses ready.”

Lee Adamson from Camrose won the All-Pro Dash for Cash.

“It’s always nice to come up to Grande Prairie and start the year out early and good. The horses performed like I hoped they would. I think this is the third or fourth time we’ve managed to get the buckle, so we’re pretty happy.”

The next stop for the WPCA is Saskatoon, starting June 7. The next stop for the WCA will be the first-ever Boots and Moccasins the weekend of June 15, also at Evergreen Park. The All-Pro wagons will be back in the Peace Country the weekend of June 22 for the Cranberry Lake Rodeo.
