Today is Louis Riel Day in the city as proclaimed by Mayor Bill Given last week.
On this day in 1885, the Canadian Government hanged the political leader of the Metis.
Walter Andreeff, Project Manager with Metis Local 1990, says the community celebrates Riel standing up to the government and fighting for the rights of western Canada.
“And we celebrate this to celebrate the leadership and spirit of Louis Riel who was admired all across Canada, not just by the Metis people but lots of other people that weave into the history of our beautiful country.”
