Awards given out to kick off Stompede

May 29, 2018 | 2:31 PM

Stompede handed out its 2018 awards and named a new Wagonmaster at today’s Bust Out BBQ, held at Revolution Place.

Stompede committee treasurer Cheryl Kimble has been named Stomper of the Year.

“I was absolutely stunned. Nobody has talked about it much. We have our vote and we got busy with putting the show on. It was a humbling experience, it was an honour and I can’t do what I do without the great crew we have here at the 2018 Stompede committee.”

She decided to take the job as treasurer after the previous one stepped down.

“I’m like ‘How hard could it be?’, but it is a big leap. It is a learning experience, but we have such incredible sponsors and support from the community that, when I needed extra help, there was help there to be had.”

Ninety-year-old Jim Brown is this year’s Stompede Wagonmaster. He was born in the Peace and now lives in Mead, Washington, which is near Spokane.

“I was born in a log cabin. My grandfather came from Clarkston, Washington. He was the first big-game hunter north of Jasper (National) Park.”

We asked him if he still likes to ride a horse.

“You bet I do. I can still get on one without any help if it’s not too tall. I’ve been real fortunate. I’ve never had an operation. The only thing I did do was have this knee (his left) replaced.”

JDA has been given the Business Appreciation Award.
