UPDATE: Crews battle fire at Saskatoon Island Provincial Park

Update May 22 (7:18 p.m.): The wildfire in Saskatoon Island Provincial Park is now under control. According to an update from the Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke, the blaze is still burning at 2.5 hectares and it isn’t expected to grow.

Update May 22: A fire burning in Saskatoon Island Provincial Park is now at 2.5 hectares. 

Right now, a 20-man crew along with 4 structural firefighters from Wembley fire department are helping to extinguish the fire.

“Light winds expected today, we expect a great firefighting day,” said Wildfire Information Officer Kelly Burke in an email to EverythingGP.

The walking trails on the south end of the park are closed until the fire is extinguished. The park’s day use areas and campgrounds are still open.

May 21: Crews were busy battling a fire at Saskatoon Island Provincial Park Monday and it is now listed as under control.

The Wembley Fire Department was called out at 1:30 in the afternoon and the County of Grande Prairie requested assistance from the province to help put out the 1.5 hectare blaze.

There were two helicopters and crews on site bucketing

Crews from Beaverlodge and La Glace also assisted.

Walking trails remain closed, but there appears to be no major loss to the park according to the Wembley Fire Department.

The wildfire danger for the Grande Prairie Forest Area is high.
