Stompede generates $6.6 million in regional revenue

The 2017 iteration of the Grande Prairie Stompede generated $6.6 million in spin-off cash for the region.

New president Trevor Denis outlined the ways the May event created economic stability.

“The figures (show) spending is combined with out-of-town athletes, family members, spectators, other visitors to the region, and in combination with Grande Prairie spending as well,” he said.

He calls the summer event “huge” for the area.

“It’s important to our region and the city of Grande Prairie. It creates 31 jobs, and $1.1 million dollars in wages, which leads to taxes being paid as well,” he said. “The support from the community is astounding. Especially last year, as everyone came to the table.”

Sponsorship last year was an estimated $600,000 through donations, sponsorship money and in-kind gifts and products.

“It was the biggest we’ve had in 40 years,” said Denis, who was thankful for the way they have been supported.

Denis said there are a few things in the works, and said planning is already underway for the 2018 iteration. The first official meeting was last Wednesday.

“The planning is already in process for 2018,” he said. “We’ve applied for a few government grants to help our sustainability and we’re looking for a positive response from that.”

They will find out in the new year about the grants.
