City Administration looks at Supervised Consumption Services report

Feb 7, 2018 | 6:07 AM

During a committee meeting Tuesday, the city was given a report on Supervised Consumption Services that recommend Administration to undertake a strategic approach.

Cameron Thompson, Planner 1 for the city says what that means is trying to figure out a definition and make an amendment to the bylaw if a permanent site was to open.

“The current land use bylaw does not contemplate the use of this specific nature and so the first step would be to add an exclusive definition for supervised consumption services.”

He adds “so the idea of putting a definition first is to basically prepare the city if and should a future site be necessary and that would basically ensure that the city has the best public consultation process available for choosing a site, should it be necessary.”

He says if HIV North was to open a mobile unit, it would not require changes to bylaws as it operates independently of the Land Use Bylaw and Municipal Business Licencing because it would be a non-profit organization operating it.

HIV North has said they are interested in opening a mobile unit.
