Local curling coach set for second Olympics

Feb 6, 2018 | 4:00 AM

Local curler Renee Sonnenberg will be arriving in Pyeongchang this week.  She is on the coaching staff for Team Canada’s women’s curling team.

Sonnenberg also went to the Olympics in 2010 as a coach for the Danish women’s curling team, but this time around she is excited to wear the maple leaf.

“The biggest difference is that I am part of Team Canada. Vancouver was a phenomenal experience for me, but I remember late in the week when the Canadians were on the podium and I really wanted to wear the maple leaf on my back. I am really excited I get to do that,” said Sonnenberg prior to heading to South Korea.

The time change will be something to get accustomed to as Pyeongchang is 16 hours ahead of Grande Prairie, and 14 ahead of Ottawa.

“So what is the middle of the night right now will be the middle of the day in a week. It is really important to get the girls adjusted to switching their clocks. Also, find out what the weather is like and what the food will be like.”

Opening ceremonies are Friday and Rachel Homan’s rink’s first game is February 15 against the host team.

Sonnenberg says she is looking forward to being a part of the opening and closing ceremonies and on the bench near the ice surface.
