Humboldt Broncos to be honoured in Peace River this weekend

Aug 31, 2018 | 9:24 AM

It will be a jam-packed weekend in Peace River as the community hosts and honours the Humboldt Broncos with a pair of pre-season games.

Darcy Haugan, who coached the Broncos, hailed from Peace River and was one of the 16 who died in the crash involving the Broncos bus and semi-trailer truck on April 6th.

The two games this weekend will feature the Broncos facing the Whitecourt Wolverines Saturday night, and then battle the Grande Prairie Storm Sunday afternoon.

Organizer for the event Blaine Freidel explained ever since tickets went on sale for the two games, they have been flying off the shelves.

“They went pretty quickly off the start. Now that we are getting closer to the date, they are moving quite well. Talking with Whitecourt and Humboldt, they have a lot of fans and a fan bus and lots of family & people coming. So that takes a toll on the tickets as well. “

Tickets for the game against Grande Prairie are officially sold out, but as of Friday morning, there were still some tickets available for the tilt between the Broncos and Whitecourt Wolverines.

Freidel also revealed there will be much more than just hockey going on this weekend.

“It’s going to be busy. I am hoping the weather is good. There is going to be an outdoor fundraiser BBQ that is going to start 3 hours before game time. There will also be merchandise. There will be lots going on, and lots of good ol faces to see again with the game of hockey. It’s going to be exciting. “

Saturday night’s game between the Humboldt Broncos and the Whitecourt Wolverines is at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday’s game featuring the Broncos and Grande Prairie Storm is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. puck drop.
