Grande Prairie population increases from last municipal census

Aug 28, 2018 | 11:46 AM

Grande Prairie’s population is up, according to the latest municipal census.  The population is 69,088 according to the unofficial 2018 municipal census results.

The count is up 532 individuals from the last municipal census conducted in 2015.

“Even through challenging economic times like the last couple years, Grande Prairie’s story continues to be one of growth and opportunity,” said Bill Given, City of Grande Prairie Mayor. “Our City has nearly doubled in population since 2000 and it shows that our community is not only resilient but that we have a bright future ahead of us.”

He says the count is directly related to the amount of provincial and federal grant dollars received.

“We have put a significant amount of effort in so that we get a 99.99 per cent response rate. We make sure there is no door that is left unknocked, no apartment that is left unvisited and no person that is left uncounted.”

The total number of private dwellings in the city is also up. Private dwellings increased to 31,851, which is up 914 from the 30,937 private dwellings recorded in the 2015 census.

The 2018 population number is not official until accepted by the Provincial Minister of Municipal Affairs.
