City to take a closer look at what they can do for playground/school zone safety

Aug 28, 2018 | 5:48 AM

The city will be taking a look at the visibility of playground and school zones.

Councillor Dylan Bressey says knowing where the speed limit changes have been a concern in the community.

“I think another concern I do hear is our enforcement of school and playground zones and wondering if we are doing enough to advertise and be proactive instead of just giving people tickets. I want to make it very clear that, although it is a role for enforcement, we also need to do a better job of showing people when they need to slow down.”

Councillor Wade Pilat says he has also heard concerns.

“Maybe just the look of the signs being changed would be enough to get people’s attention to the areas. Maybe we need to take a bigger view of this.”

Bressey points to sign size, reflective materials, better-painted crosswalks or signs that show your speed as possible additions to the area. He made a motion for city administration to look at the issue and bring a report to a future committee meeting.

Other council highlights:

The cap for cannabis retail licences will be re-looked at. The bylaw amendment will appear at the next Infrastructure and Protective Services committee meeting agenda for September 4.

Council approved an extension of the lease for Willow Place for an additional 15 years to the Canadian Mental Health Association. They also waived fees and levies for their proposed 60 unit affordable housing project and 22 unit permanent supportive housing project.

The 2018 Property Tax Sale will be taking place on November 30 and properties that received a 2017 recovery notification will be offered for sale under public auction.
