Encana to help pay for a section of road repair in the county

An oil and gas company is stepping up to help pay to fix and improve a road in the County of Grande Prairie.

Encana has been working near Saskatoon Mountain west of Grande Prairie and Division Five councillor Bob Marshall says large trucks were destroying township road 720 near range road 90.

“This is outside of our road ban season and we were still stopping them just because the road can’t handle it. Most of these roads were built back in the ‘50’s with black dirt put in, a clay cap and gravel on top, back then it was fine for the traffic that was on it at the time but now with the heavy traffic on it, the roads are not standing up.”

He says “our Public Works came up with a plan to partner with and develop business cases with industry to help with these roads because by far they are the ones that are impacting them the most.”

Marshall hopes to see more of the same in the future.

“They (industry) are using it, they are the ones impacting the roads the most significant with the heavy traffic, it is not the smaller vehicles that are typically doing the damage.”

Encana will cover half of the $2 million cost and work will start soon on the 3.2 km stretch.
