Grande Prairie initiative to reduce and stop crime launches

Jan 29, 2018 | 5:47 AM

A new crime-fighting initiative is being tested in Grande Prairie.

Darren Boyer says Lightcatch uses security camera images of crimes in real time that are shared to users.

“And then if every neighbour or co-worker, or even people in the area knew what just took place and knew what to look for, they could use the phone in their pocket to take a photo if they saw the suspect. We could even use texts or phone calls to build a trail of evidence for police to act on.”

Right now there is a Facebook page being used to share information.

“And to be really effective at stopping theft, we’d like to have as many people in Grande Prairie as possible be a member of our group, and if they are a member, be willing to look at the posts and act on them if the footage is in their neighbourhood.”

Boyer says soon there will be an app for people to download.
