Tools for School a focus for United Way Alberta Northwest

Aug 20, 2018 | 10:44 AM

Stuffing backpacks with school supplies prior to the academic year is just one of the many ways United Way Alberta Northwest is helping children throughout the year.

In the past, the organization ran on three pillars: Poverty to Possibility, Housing Communities and Strong Kids. The fourth pillar, Tools For School, was added this year to fill in some gaps, according to Executive Director Jamie Craig.

“Yes, the backpack is a part of it but it really is a little bit of everything. Everything that those kids need to succeed. It is an ongoing thing throughout the entire year.”

Shoes and winter clothing, snacks and nutrition, and literacy materials are also initiatives that have been added to their focuses.

Right now, local businesses are collecting school supplies to later be given to children in need. Costco has committed to donating 420 packs with a few supplies in each bag. Cummins has donated a seacan for storage, a room for sorting along with 20 volunteers. A goal of $10,000 has been set for the annual fundraiser hosted at Staples that is underway.

United Way has received close to 350 requests for backpacks this year from various organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters and YMCA. Craig explains that if someone was interested in getting a backpack of supplies, contact them as they will not turn anyone away.

The organization is hoping to have the bags packed up by August 29 and ready to go to children.

“We assemble specific to the grade and the school. We pull their school list to assemble the bags that way. It takes some time,” said Craig.
