Carriage Lane residents hopeful for relocation of bus stop

Dec 12, 2018 | 8:29 AM

Some concerned parents who live in the Carriage Lane neighbourhood want one of their school bus stops moved after a child was almost hit by a bus.

“The one child was running behind and was in a hurry, and kids do what kids do and she ran out into the street and unfortunately there was another bus coming.  By the Grace of God, she was not hit,” Amanda Rombs explained to EverythingGP. “We take our children to the bus now, rather than allowing them to go to the bus on their own.  We take them to the bus and then we also stand and wait for them to get off the bus so that we can help them across the road safely.”

Rombs is one of the parents who is trying to get the stop moved from the south side of Abbey Lane to the north side.  There are four young children in Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 3 that have to cross the busy street to get to their bus stop. There are only streetlights on one side of Abbey Lane.

“Where they are required to stand is on the side of the street where there is no street lighting.  And the bus stop is at a fire hydrant, which I know it’s supposed to be plowed but it’s very often not plowed, so that forces the kids to actually stand right on the street.”

Rombs first contacted the Catholic School District about these concerns on November 7th.  She told our newsroom she finally has a meeting this morning with the Catholic School district to discuss a new route.

“The location we have suggested is the driveway of the child who was almost struck, and it’s lit, it’s always plowed, there are surveillance cameras to keep watch of what goes on.  It’s just a much safer alternative.”

Everything GP has put a call into First Student and we are waiting to hear back.
