Gaetz Memorial United Church becomes fully affirming

Oct 25, 2017 | 11:57 AM

Red Deer’s Gaetz United Memorial Church is now a fully Affirming Ministry.

This week, members and adherents voted 97 per cent in favour of declaring the church affirming, meaning it is openly supportive and inclusive of all.

Gaetz United began the affirmation process last March through the organization Affirm United.

“As a vibrant, Spirit led United Church, Gaetz Memorial is an intentionally inclusive community for all to be their authentic selves and to experience God’s unconditional love. We welcome *ALL* to join us in sharing faith, building connections, and serving community,” a release states.

Throughout the discernment process over the last year, members have had the opportunity to partake in Pride Sunday Service and a Bible Study on Homosexuality in the Bible, share in a First Nations Circle Worship with Sunnybrook United Church and hear stories from others about why being an affirming ministry is important to them.

Gaetz Memorial has hosted a Pride Worship Service as part of Central Alberta Pride Week for the last two years, and has performed same-gender marriages for more than a decade. St. Andrew’s Church in Lacombe became an Affirming Congregation in 2011.
