Planning underway for future travel within Grande Prairie
The way we drive, walk, bike, or take transit in the city is going to be different in about 20 years and the City of Grande Prairie is planning for it.
Transportation and Safety Engineering Supervisor Robin Hutchinson says they are working on a Transportation Master Plan which will help plan for infrastructure and the way people will travel through the Swan City when the population grows to approximately 120,000. As of the last federal census in 2016, the number of people in the city is at 62,320.
“It’s all modes of transportation. We are looking at the trails and pathways – how people walk and cycle around the city. We are also looking the arterial roadways that carry the large volumes of traffic across the city as well as the local roads and collector roads,” said Hutchinson. “So, essentially, how you get from your place of residence to the place where you want to undergo recreational activities and your place of work. It is all modes on all roads.”
The first of three phases of public engagement is set for Thursday, January 25 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.. City officials will be at Teresa Sargent Hall at the Montrose Cultural Centre to collect feedback from the public on what they think of traveling in the city now and how they would like it to look in the future.
