AWG Selection Committee coming to GP in January
Grande Prairie will be looking to make a big impression on visitors from the Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Alaska January 14.
That is the day the selection committee for the 2022 Arctic Winter Games will be here.
Francois Fournier with the local bid committee says the visitors will want to look at a lot of elements related to hosting, not just facilities.
“What is the games experience going to be like for the participants. How is the community showing its support for this particular event. What is the community going to be doing to make sure that the games are successful.”
Fournier says if Grande Prairie wins the bid, the Community Knowledge Campus would serve as a Games Village.
Besides being a host for some sports, participants could also eat and sleep at CKC.
Grande Prairie is bidding against Fort McMurray for the right to host the games, and Fournier admits Fort Mac will be hard to beat.
“Part of it is what can the games do for your community. They went through the fire that was devastating. So having these kinds of games there is a real asset. So we know it is going to be tough.”
Fournier says we will find out in mid-February who the Arctic Winter Games host will be in 2022.
