Prairie Mall experiences turnaround in 2017

Jan 23, 2018 | 6:11 AM

2017 was a good year for the Prairie Mall in Grande Prairie.

Overall, the mall experienced a turn around of 5 percent when it comes to the number of shoppers and overall traffic.

General Manager of the Prairie Mall Lionel Frey shared that this is something which they track directly.

” It’s a general turnaround in the economy. We have seen that not only in traffic counts but in sales numbers with the different tenants. We track that very closely when it comes to sales figure. We track that each month. “

New stores will also be coming to the Prairie Mall in 2018, but Frey was unable to reveal what new shops will join the shopping centre.

To add to the shopping experience, numerous malls around the world are adding more entertainment, but this is tricky here in Grande Prairie according to Frey.

” Our situation it is a little more difficult because really, that entertainment factor is developed from the ground up. The developer has to have that in mind right from day one. “

Last week Amazon made big news when they announced the top cities who are vying to be the home of the giant’s second headquarters.

However, despite the boom in online shopping, Frey believes there will always be a place for retail stores.

” Obviously the shopping is important. You have entrepreneurs who open up retail shops and really the goal is to do well financially. At the same time, indirectly, retail has and always will be a builder in the community. “

Frey added that these businesses always contribute to the community, whether that be through paying municipal tax or partnering with local community groups.

In conclusion, Frey is expecting a big year for the Prairie Mall in 2018 with more traffic coming through the doors, and new stores arriving throughout the year.
