Outgoing City Councillor to focus on family and business

Oct 18, 2017 | 7:18 AM

Three Incumbent Councillors were elected back to city council while one isn’t going to be serving for the next four years. Kevin McLean was .22 percent behind Yadvinder Minhas when polls closed Monday night bringing him in ninth place and leaving him without a seat at the council table.

“I am excited. There is a new opportunity and new council elected for the city. If they all get down to work really hard, which I know they will, I think we are going to have a great opportunity for the city,” explained McLean. “Our future is bright. We have a young demographic. We have people that want to move here from everywhere in the world. We have a bright future here.”

Although McLean put his name on the ballot for his love of democracy, he says he isn’t too upset about the outcome of the election.

“I am going to get into business and make some money. I am going to be a husband and a dad. I did seven years and I don’t think you are going to see me run again for mayor or council. I am going to put my time into business and some other avenues.”

The biggest tip he has for the young and new councillors for the city is to spend time with their families when they can. He recommends that the incoming councillors say no to some of the many galas that happen in the city, especially if kids are not allowed.

Chris Thiessen, Jackie Clayton, and Kevin O’Toole will be taking on their second term on council. Bill Given has also been re-elected to his third term as Mayor.

Eunice Friesen, Dylan Bressey, Clyde Blackburn, Wade Pilat, and Yadvinder Minhas join the council table for the next four years. Minhas was a City Councillor two terms ago but chose not to run in the last election. Incumbent Councillors Helen Rice, Lorne Radbourne, and Dwight Logan announced that they would not run for the 2017 election after announcing their retirement earlier in the year.
