City noticing increase in census response

May 5, 2018 | 6:45 AM

The City of Grande Prairie is already seeing more people count themselves in for the 2018 Municipal Census.

According to City Census Coordinator Valerie Norris-Kirk, the city is seeing more people send their information in. She says as of Friday, May 4, about 30 per cent of the population had submitted their information. During the 2015 count, about 25 per cent of people in the city sent in their information altogether. She says the more people that provide their information, the easier it becomes to lock down money for services.

“The 2015 census results came in at 68,556 for the population count. Out of that number, the City of Grande Prairie was able to access $395 per person for federal and provincial program funding,” said the coordinator.

Although the deadline for responding online is set for (today) Saturday, May 5, Norris-Kirk says if residents still have their pin information, they can enter it online for the next four weeks. There will also be workers going door-to-door for the next four weeks starting on Sunday, May 6.

The Municipal Census happens every two years in the spring. On top of bringing in funding, the numbers can also be used to attract new businesses and provide a snapshot of the community’s diversity.
