Firefighter recruiting week set for mid-May

May 6, 2018 | 6:00 AM

County of Grande Prairie fire departments are recruiting and will be hosting information sessions and open houses beginning May 11.

Wembley Fire Department Chief Matt Smith says this is the first time he has ever experienced such a large-scale hiring week.

“This will be the first month where we are actually going to get everyone together and hold that one big regional [information session]. We are also going to have some open houses and let people branch off into their particular areas.”

Smith says dedication and integrity are key factors for potential recruits for his staff in Wembley.

He says the fire service is like a brotherhood and they are looking to recruit people who are passionate about serving their community.

A lot of firefighters that work in the Grande Prairie area use it as a stepping stone to jobs in larger markets across Canada.

“It’s a transient community. So, we have a lot of people who come out for work for a couple of years and then maybe they secure something back where they are from, whether it be in B.C., Ontario or Nova Scotia,” added Smith.

Joint information sessions will take place on May 11 at the Dunes Fire Hall and May 12 at the Albright Community Hall from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Individual open houses will be from May 14 -18 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.:

Monday, May 14 – Beaverlodge Fire Hall and Bezanson Fire Hall

Tuesday, May 15 – Sexsmith Fire Hall and Teepee Creek Fire Hall

Wednesday, May 16 – Clairmont Fire Hall and Wembley Fire Hall

Thursday, May 17 – La Glace Fire Hall

Friday, May 18 – Hythe Fire Hall
