Alberta highways will be busy with volunteers today
Motorists are reminded to watch for people in orange vests in ditches and along the sides of highways today. The annual Spring cleanup on Alberta highways is taking place.
A spokesperson for Alberta Transportation Wayne Wood says folks can expect to see a lot of people, particularly young people, as they clean up debris from the winter months.
“It’s always volunteer groups and not for profit agencies that volunteer to do this kind of work for us and in return we pay them between $55 and $100/per kilometre cleaned, which amounts to a great deal of money for them to continue their operations throughout the year,” said Wood.
Last year about $1.1 million went to 4H clubs, Scouts, Girl Guides, schools, church organizations, Rotary clubs, sports teams and other non-profit groups.
