Bear spray incident leads to jail time

May 3, 2018 | 5:30 AM

A man charged after a shoplifting incident led to two people being bear sprayed has been given a jail sentence.

Alberta Justice says Macauley Boivin admitted to single counts each of assault with a weapon, unauthorized possession of a weapon, breach, possession of a controlled substance, and shoplifting in Grande Prairie court.

Four other charges were withdrawn. He was given 195 days in jail, minus 108 days for time already spent in custody.

Grande Prairie RCMP say on February 28 just before noon, they were called to a disturbance at the Canadian Tire store in Grande Prairie.

A suspected shoplifter was being held by a store employee and bystander. The employee and bystander were both hit by bear spray and had what police called minor injuries.
