UPDATE #2 (2:19 p.m) There has been no movement noticed or any other reports of the bear since Tuesday, according to Cox. The park remains closed and the traps are still out until they can make sure the bear is no longer in the area.

UPDATE #1 (4:06 p.m.)

O’Brien Provincial Park has been closed until further notice.

Alberta Parks has posted the closure due to an aggressive grizzly bear in the area feeding on an animal carcass. An advisory for the area was posted on Tuesday, August 7.

Brendan Cox with Alberta Fish and Wildlife says the bear was feeding close to a roadway last night. They decided to move the food into the provincial park away to protect people and the bear.

“We have set live traps in hopes that we can take this bear to an area where there is less of a chance of it running into people and less chance of it becoming habituated to people,” said Cox.

He says they will continue to monitor the area for the next few days and until the bear moves on or is captured, the park will remain closed.

The trail connecting O’Brien Provincial Park to Nitehawk Year-Round Adventure Park has also been closed, according to a post on Facebook from Nitehawk Race Director Kim Johnson Lebrun.

She adds in the post that they would like runners and hikers to be safe and are asking them not to use the trail.
