More highlights from Monday’s city council meeting

Other highlights from Monday’s city council meeting include:

– Council approved buying some land along 99 Avenue for $288,000 for a second Elders Caring Shelter. This is part of a loan agreement with Metis Local 1990. Construction on the 34-bed facility is expected to start in January.

– Council rejected re-zoning some land in the Vision West Business Park for a bus maintenance facility for Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools by an 8-0 vote. Council wondered if this was the best use for the land and thought it should be saved for a municipal purpose. It is currently zoned municipal reserve.

 – Council sent a new sign bylaw back to the standing committee level for more discussion. Mayor Bill Given says he was concerned with how the changes were advertised and thought a report should go to committee first. The changes would increase the allowable size of electronic signs, along with permitting more electronic displays and third-party advertising. The bylaw should be back before council January 14.
